In 2015, a group of Wayne State University students initiated Detroit Dhamaal Dance Competition with a dual mission: to create a lasting impact in the Detroit Area and promote South Asian culture. The inaugural event in 2016, held at the Music Hall for the Performing Arts, attracted over 500 attendees and featured eight teams from around the country. Over the next four years, Detroit Dhamaal stayed true to its mission, raising over $10,000 for local charities and initiatives. The competition's legacy is unmatched, leaving a profound and enduring impact on the city and its people.

After a 3-year hiatus due to Covid-19, Detroit Dhamaal has undergone a rebranding to Motor City Dhamaal. This change mirrors the dynamic transformation of the "New Detroit" and the progress the city has witnessed over the past 15 years. Despite the new name, the mission remains unchanged—Motor City Dhamaal is committed to enhancing the lives of Detroit residents while promoting South Asian culture. Our goal is to carry forward the enduring legacy established by Detroit Dhamaal, adapting it to reflect the city's newfound vibrancy. Join us in continuing this mission and contributing to a better tomorrow for all.
